Cornelius Zirbo was born in Cluj-Napoca, where he began to study cello at “Augustin Bena” Elementary Music School. He then continued his studies at “Sigismund Toduta” High school of Music, in his hometown and currently he is a a student at “Dinu Lipatti” National High school of Arts, Bucharest (Octavian Lup’s cello class).    

Prior to this point he received guidance from internationally renowned cellists such as: Gautier Capuçon, Frans Helmerson, Miklós Perényi, Götz Teutsch, Maximillian Hornung, Romain Garioud, Jan-Erik Gustafsson, Denis Severin, Wendy Warner, Marin Cazacu, Răzvan Suma and so on.

During 2016-1017, Cornelius studied in Paris with Gautier Capuçon (Classe d'Excellence de Violoncelle, Fondation Louis Vuitton). He had the tremendous privilege to participate as an active student at Verbier Summer Academy 2017 where he consolidated his studies of cello and chamber music with Frans Helmerson, Miklós Perényi, Pamela Frank, Klaus Hellwig, Gábor Takács-Nagy and James Ehnes. Furthermore, he took part at the cello masterclasses from Kronberg Academy, Germany, and in July, 2016 he was accepted as an active student at Frans Helmerson’s cello masterclasses at Palazzo Ricci in Montepulciano, Italy.

He is laureate of numerous competitions in his home country and abroad, for instance: StreichWerk International Competition (Berlin, Germany), "Antonio Janigro" International Cello Competition, (Poreč, Croatia), “ProArt” International Cello Competition (Khmelnitsky, Ukraine), "Concertino Praga" International Competition (Prague, Czech Republic), "Young Virtuosos" International Competition (Sofia, Bulgaria) and “Mihail Jora” National Competition (Bucharest).

His soloist activity is including concerts and recitals in Romania, Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, France, Great Britain and Denmark in prestigious halls of concerts, such as: Konzerthaus (Berlin), Foundation Louis Vuitton Auditorium (Paris), Rudolfinum (Praga), Bâtiment de Forces Motrices (Geneva) and Romanian Athenaeum (Bucharest). Cornelius appeared on the stages of famous music festivals: Verbier (Switzerland), Enescu (Romania), SoNoRo (Romania), Chiemgauer Musikfrühling (Germany) and South Bohemian (Cehia).

As a soloist he performed with Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Academic Symphony Orchestra of Khmelnitsky Philarmonie, "Moldova" State Philharmonic, "Transilvania" State Philharmonic, The Royal Camerata, The National Youth Orchestra of The Princess Margareta of Romania Foundation and The "JUNIOR" Romanian National Orchestra. 

He also partook in several chamber music ensembles alongside established artists such as: Mihaela Martin, Frans Helmerson, Gautier Capuçon, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Anna-Liisa Bezrodny and so forth.

Cornelius was granted financial support by the Royal House of Romania (through “Young Talents” Programme of Princess Margareta of Romania Fondation), The Fondation for Community and Provident Financial Romania.
